Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
